We have started our second unit of the year-Where We Are in Place and Time-and have had four wonderful frontloading experiences!! The central idea of our unit is: The environment influences the lives of indigenous people. We took an amazing hike with Ms. Jenny Whitman, our incredible docent, through the Bear Creek Open Space where we learned about native plants, animal tracks and got to see a 500 year-old mortar used by the Ohlone people. We visited the DeAnza Plantarium to discover how the indigenous people used the sun, moon and stars in their daily lives. We visited Sanborn park to enjoy an Ohlone experience. We ground acorns, made fire, learned how to weave tule grass and hiked through the forest to discover how the Ohlone used the trees and plants. Finally, we were lucky enough to listen to Mr. Orozco share stories and music from our local indigenous tribes! We have become so knowledgeable!!! |
